It's the problem on "Routing area update" if you get problem when you are driving.
Basically, if you fixed on 2G or 3G network, it do reduce the chance of routing area update failure. But it still depends on the quality of radio coverage. If operator didn't optimize it's network, whatever 2G or 3G you are, you still get disconnect very easily.
In theory, it doesn't metter you handover between 2G and 3G, "MOBILE" should choose the bast betwork, if mobile ping-pong between two BTS/RBS, there is a high possibility to be disconnected because of the long time of routing area update cause the failure of routing area update.
Please don't get it wrong, it's nothing regard with SGSN or HLR/VLR. Normally it's radio network problem. Please make yourself clear the defination of VLR update.
