Don't be so upset. Technology can be fast but good engineering needs time. Perfection is not easy to catch and it really needs patience. I think they will eventually.
Japanese is strong at engineering but weak at sales/marketing. I really like Japanese cars and think they're good and cheap (because of their excellent quality). I just bought almost brand new 2017 GSF and only paid $64500+tax. I think it's very cheap even in USA. Why is it so cheap? Because not many people understand it. If Japanese are good at sales/marketing, then their cars will not be so cheap today. So just keep this secret in your mind.
In addition, if Japanese become good at sales/marketing, then their engineering will also loose some strength, because engineering and sales/marketing are totally different characteristic. No one can master on both, I think. Just like you choose your girl/boy friend or wife/husband. No one is perfect. You need to make a choice.

Germany : Engineering (80), Sales/Marketing (20) --> 70/30 (recently)
USA : Engineering (60), Sales/Marketing (40)
Taiwan : Engineering (40), Sales/Marketing (60)
100 is total. I think Germany also has very good engineering but they face competition from Japan. So they move their focus to Sales/Marketing more recently. It's pity. They was able to build reliable cars in the past. USA has best Sales/Marketing in western world, so they are very good at technology.
