SZ486/476 from Taiwan or SZ483N/C from HK, please help!

Hello everyone, first of all, im from Taiwan and i can read/write chinese but english is much faster for me as i dont have chinese characters on my laptop keys. please help me if you can read this...i will be very grateful.

Basically, i want to get a sony sz laptop with carbon fibre case and if i get it in taiwan, i will have two options, the cheaper one for $6xxxx or the top of the range $7xxxx, but the problem is, i want my Vista os to display english not chinese because my girlfriend cant read chinese and i know that the SZ in Taiwan only come with chinese os but the SZ from HK is in English. However, if i buy it in HK, i will have to buy the SZ483N/C which is about $7xxxx NT but i think the SZ476 from Taiwan is powerful enough for me and i dont want to spend extra $10000NT for something i dont need, all i want is the beautiful carbon fibre case.

my question is, if i buy the SZ476 from Taiwan, can i get the Vista display language from chinese to english, like the laptops you buy in Hong Kong?? if it is possible, can someone tell me how to do it??

thank you all for reading^^

hey, i'm a SZ476 user and i remember when i first got my SZ476, the Vista setup asked me to select a language as the default language for Vista, it also warned me that once it's being set, it can't be changed. i obviously chose Traditional Chinese as default, i wonder maybe English is also an option? unfortunately i can not check that for you now, because that means i have to reload my vista to confirm for you!

But anyway, just a thought that might help you out a little
Hello guys, thanks for helping me out, i think since it remains a possibility that the Taiwanese version will include english, i will go have a look once i return to my lovely country^^. any recommendation to where best to get the laptop?? i live in Taipei and will be back by the end of August...do you think i should wait for the SZ6xx??

Mr.蛋蛋, your english is very good!! do you used to study abroad??

it depends what u looking for, best service or best price? i bought my sz476 in so-net taipei, the service wasn't bad overall, they let u check the laptop in details b4 u pay. if u looking for better price, i think yahoo auction has various sellers that offers sz under the recommended price by sony.

u can refer to my post for the whole purchase experience of my sz476 here:

well currently there's no news about when SZ6xx will be released in TW...so unless u r stopping by for a long time, i don't recommend u to wait for it.

if by any chance SZ6xx is equipped with a better graphic card (7400 is simply becoming boring now, especially that CR13 comes with ati x2300, which performs a little better than 7400), then i would say yeah sure, wait for SZ6xx.

thanq for the compliment, i immigrated to South Africa when i was 10 and stayed there for 12 years, that's where i learned my English
Hello Mr.蛋蛋..
i really like you introduction to sz476, and i think thats gonna be my choice too when i return to TW, however, because i live in the uk most of the time so when it comes to selling my old laptops, i have to make sure it displays english, as you mentioned above, ur vista asked you to choose language but you weren't sure if enlish was an option too,..so i called the sony helpline in tw, and this guy told me that i cant change to english....and if i try to install vista in a different language, there will be problems with the systems....etc. im coming back from uk to tw via hk then going straight back to uk from tw, so if the taiwan version is no good then i cant get it in hk either....the uk version of sz costs $12xxxx which is 2x more nearly, cant afford that much....what do you think i should do?? i found on google tw there are people selling the sz and can change to english version, but i prefer to buy it from sony centre in tw, is there any way to find the answer to my problem??

thanks for helping!

sorry to hear that, but as about the part with "there will be problems with the systems", to me sounds rather bureaucratic, there's way to do it i'm sure, just like how local TW sellers convert JP version of VAIO NB to chinese XP/Vista.

There're a few services offered by Sony Vaio dealers out there to help you change your Vista/XP OS language from Trad Chn->Eng and vice versa. However there're charges for the service ranging from 1500NTD onwards.

But if you take note of the Vaio Vista specifications, it is listed for the HK Vaios that the Vista OS is in English but with Trad Chn language pack.

Meanwhile, yeah it seems that only Sony TW has the middle range Vaio SZ. In Singapore and HK, they only offer the low range SZ43 and the high range SZ48. Not only that, there is also a vast difference in the price range as well.

I am currently using SZ36TP (Win XP Pro Trad Chn). I registered for the Vista upgrade and opted to get the upgrade kit in English OS. However when I tried to go through the normal upgrading procedures, the system prompted that the language is different and the upgrade cannot be completed. Therefore I installed a fresh Vista from the upgrade kit on a different partition in the hard disk (Dual OS Boot: 1-Win XP Pro Trad Chn, 2-Win Vista Business Eng).

The drivers and applications for the SZ English was then obtained from the Sony US support website.

I use NJ Star to type in chinese words using HYPY (Han Yu Pin Yin), hahaz.

XD

P.S. Its not really the carbon fibre lid cover (That should only be available in the US and Japan), its just the slim lcd. (1.69kg vs 1.95kg)
Hello kuroten, thanks for the resourceful info. about getting the tw sz os from chinese to english. however, if i get the sz476 in tw and convert os to english, im looking at about spending $67xxx or more (please correct if its wrong) and if i get the sz483 in hk, thats around $71xxx i think (where the tw sz486 will be around $74xxx)...and considering the latter is more powerful and plus the hk vista os allows me to switch between english and traditional chinese. its probably more wise to purchase sz in hk for me..

i was surprised actually when you said that none of the sz in tw comes with the carbon fibre chasis (i thought both the 476 and 486 do), i went to the sony centre in the uk, and with the top of the range sz they have, the thin lid has this silky and shiny pattern with glossy blue dusts and it costs about $12xxxxNT, is this the true carbon fibre chasis??

thanks a lot for helping^^
